It’s Good To Be Back!

Since the lifting of most COVID-19 restrictions in April, Singapore Sports Hub’s calendar has been fast filling with mass participation activities, sporting events and concerts. In the past months, it has welcomed back OCBC Cycle, the first in-person mass-participation activity since the onset of the pandemic; concerts by Taiwanese singer A-Lin, Taiwanese band 831 and K-pop group NCT127 who performed to appreciative crowds hungry for live entertainment; and UFC 275, a sold-out mixed martial arts extravaganza hailed by many as an “instant classic”.

There is also a wide selection of activities for children and families, from multi-activity camps to fitness classes such as yoga and Zumba, and even Chinese calligraphy. Patrons are back in full force and Singapore Sports Hub is a hive of activities.

However, this was not the case for the most part of 2020 and 2021.

Supported the nation
At the height of the pandemic in 2020, venues at Singapore Sports Hub were closed and the National Stadium, OCBC Arena, OCBC Aquatic Centre and 100PLUS Promenade were transformed into a temporary home for some 3,000 migrant workers.

The Singapore Sports Hub team went all out to liven up the temporary abode of these migrant workers. Other than providing beds and tents, the team ensured the residents had access to:

  • Reliable Wi-Fi, which had to be compatible with the older phone models that many migrant workers were using
  • Meals familiar to their South Asian tastes
  • Minimart selling snacks and personal items they needed
  • Haircuts by professional barbers
  • Exercise sessions and games during their recreation time
  • Latest news especially on cricket, a popular sport with the migrant workers

This initiative, Project Dorm @ Sports Hub, was an unexpected endeavour but a meaningful way to use the facilities and tap on the team’s expertise at a time when the nation stood united in its fight against the spread of the pandemic.

Singapore Sports Hub also kept its facilities open for national athletes as they trained for one of the biggest sporting events of their lives — the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games. It was indeed exciting to see the athletes representing Singapore in the international sporting arena once more.

Following two years of strict safe management measures, Singapore Sports Hub welcomes the return of more patrons, mass participation activities and large-scale live events.

Pivoted to offer different experiences
Many events and activities were also cancelled as the world battled with the COVID-19 pandemic.

When in-person activities were not possible, the team at Singapore Sports Hub pivoted online and introduced various new experiences, including virtual workouts so that Singaporeans could keep fit in the safety of their homes, and even hosted a National Day Fiesta 2020 Live Show to celebrate the nation’s birthday.

As the situation improved, they organised events and activities around prevailing safe management measures so that patrons could once again participate in sports and catch live sporting action at its venues.

All activities have resumed at Singapore Sports Hub, including fitness classes, concerts and venue tours (above).
