The kampong spirit may have started in Singapore’s old villages, but it still lives on today – in the way neighbours greet one another at the lift, how we show up for those who need us most, and how communities rally when it matters. At its heart, it’s simple and sincere: everyone looks out for one another. That sense of shared care extends beyond people, embracing every member of the household, including the animals that bring joy to our daily lives.

This National Day, that spirit comes alive at the Good Pet Fair (Kampong Edition), where the whole Kampong, pets included, gathers to celebrate Singapore’s 60th birthday. Taking place on 9th and 10th August at the Singapore Sports Hub, as part of National Day celebrations, the Good Pet Fair is more than just a gathering for pet lovers. It’s a family-friendly National Day celebration of kinship, care, and community – where everyone can play, learn, and connect, while also discovering how to support the many animal welfare efforts that embody the kampong spirit today.

A Kampong Carnival of Creatures

Throughout the National Day weekend, the fair transforms the Singapore Sports Hub into a vibrant celebration of animal life. The Freedom Flyers return with a parrot free-flying exhibition, offering a rare chance to witness these bright, intelligent birds soar towards the Stadium Roar. It’s a moment of wonder for all ages, made even better with photos and feeding sessions that bring bird lovers face to face with the feathered stars.

Nearby, rows of tanks showcase Betta fish, Guppies, and Medaka (Japanese rice fish), competing in a two-day fish beauty competition judged on colour, vibrancy, and form.

Adding to the lively mix, guinea pigs and a critter zone with springtails and earthworms make unexpected but endearing appearances. Each with their own charm, these small creatures are part of a wider showcase that invites curiosity and celebrates the diversity of animal companions.

Record-Breaking Moments, Fast Feet, Fluffy Tails

On 9th August, Good Pet Fair will attempt to break the Singapore Book of Records for the largest gathering of Golden Retrievers and Corgis at the Promenade. On this day, the Singapore Sports Hub is set to house a sea of wagging tails, proof that community is best measured not just in numbers, but in the joyful noise of togetherness.

The following day, on 10th August canine athletes take centre stage in the Flyball Showcase by WOOGA!, Singapore’s first-ever public demo of this thrilling team relay. Watch as dogs leap over hurdles, trigger spring-loaded boxes, and race back in an adrenaline-pumping spectacle of agility and teamwork.

Another charming moment unfolds at the Best Dressed Pet Contest, where shortlisted pets strut their stuff in kampong-themed or patriotic red-and-white outfits. Judged on creativity and flair, the event is equal parts heartwarming and delightful.

Workshops, Talks, and Thoughtful Encounters

The heart of any community lies in how it learns and grows together. The fair features a series of talks and workshops aimed at helping pet owners better understand and care for their animal companions.

At the workshop area, explore topics like Helping Pets Age Gracefully with Rehab Vet, or join Back on Track for advice on Joint Care Do’s and Don’ts. Families can also join Petmyli in making pet-friendly fruit jelly and decorating painted cups, a hands-on way to create and connect. Gaia Wholistic offers an intriguing introduction to animal communication.

Gaia Wholistic is also organising a talk about physiotherapy for dogs, while PetPat will cover cat grooming. The talks offer practical guidance and deeper understanding of animal health. These talks are free, informal, and designed to encourage genuine learning.

Marketplace with a Mission

The kampong spirit is also about lifting others up, and this extends to the Animal Welfare Groups (AWGs) on site. Through merchandise sales and education booths, AWGs will show how everyday choices, like where we shop or how we adopt, can directly improve the lives of our animal companions. Visitors are encouraged to explore the booths, ask questions, and discover how to be part of a more caring, supportive pet community.

The retail area features 91 vendors including 12 AWGs, showcasing treats, accessories, supplements, lifestyle products, and even matching outfits for humans and pets. Shoppers can also participate in a Stamping Station challenge, collect three stamps across the venue to complete a fun artwork and redeem a goodie bag (limited to 100 per day).

A National Day Celebration for All – Pets Included

"We love that the Singapore Sports Hub has created thoughtful, pet-friendly National Day activities for both pets and owners," says David Sedfield, who plans to visit the fair with his wife, Sze Lin and their golden doo dle, Mooncake. "It’s rare to find a National Day event where Mooncake can join in. We’re looking forward to seeing what’s on offer and letting him enjoy the day with us."

Whether you’re there to learn, play, or simply enjoy a day out with your family, the Good Pet Fair offers more than just celebration – it reflects the values that continue to hold us together. By making space for pets in our National Day celebrations, we honour the inclusive, caring kampong spirit that built this nation, and still brings people together today.
