If you’d like to embark on new adventures and try new sports this new year, virtual cycling might be right up your alley. A great way of maintaining cardiovascular fitness , virtual cycling can show you new sights and bring you to literally anywhere.
Cycling is becoming part of life here, with brightly coloured two-wheelers whizzing down roads and park connectors all day and night. While you can discover a city through conventional cycling, virtual cycling invites you to travel to distant lands.
Train It Yourself
That feeling of speeding down the open road can come with a feeling of freedom. Powered by the immersive Zwift app, the Train It Yourself programme at Shimano Cycling World indulges riders in this experience, along thrilling routes through rich virtual landscapes that are ultimately familiar, like through nighttime Tokyo or famous routes in Europe.
“The public can also test out Shimano’s bicycle components on an actual road bike, and get fitter and stronger with the Train It Yourself programme this new year,” suggests Chong Chie Hui, Assistant Manager of Shimano Singapore, Marketing and Customer Service – Bike.
You can also attempt Zwift’s “Road to Sky”, set in the fictional island of Watopia. Using GPS data, this challenging course perfectly matches the 21 hairpin turns on the actual climb to Alp d’Huez from the Tour De France. Good luck with this route! It runs 12.2km with a total elevation gain of over 1,000 metres.
If following in the exact footsteps of professional athletes isn’t your thing, then just clock the mileage you’re comfortable with. The maximum session length is two hours.
“Train It Yourself is open to everyone regardless of their fitness levels,” emphasises Chie Hui, adding that the programme is the best way to experience the “blend of virtual cycling and serious training.”
“Train It Yourself is an awesome programme and the service was excellent,” remarked Mr Pang, a participant of Shimano Cycling World’s Train It Yourself programme.
Another participant, Mr Chan, praised it saying, “it was a great experience for me!”
