It is impossible to miss the indoor rock-climbing facility Climb Central Singapore should you find yourself at Kallang Wave Mall. Its walls, ranging from 4m and 8m to 16m — each with different features — are, after all, the mall’s centrepiece. Besides seasoned climbers, first-timers with no climbing experience are more than welcome, as Climb Central’s certified instructors are trained to get keen newbies started with a safety briefing or even conduct introductory and developmental programmes if a more structured experience is preferred.

Officially opened in October 2014, Climb Central has expanded its operations to Manila and Bangkok.

Its location within the mall by Singapore Sports Hub has certainly contributed to its success, says Climb Central’s marketing manager Ms Melissa Ho. “Being here has helped us gained greater visibility and enabled us to bring climbing closer to the general public,” she says. “We still often get participants who just happened to walk past the wall while shopping within the mall and spontaneously decided to try climbing.”

Ready for a fun, full-body workout that rock-climbing promises? Here are some programmes conducted at Climb Central Singapore that are worth trying out:

Climbing for kids
When:
 Sundays, 1pm to 2.30pm

A child-friendly introduction to climbing means parents can leave their children in the hands of instructors who will supervise and ensure the child’s safety during the session.

Introduction for adults and families
When:
1st & 3rd Sunday of the Month, 3pm to 5pm (Extra sessions available during school holidays)

This comprehensive introduction aims to get participants, in a group of eight or more, to be familiar with the safety systems and get them started with some basic climbing

Beta basics
When:
Tuesdays, 8pm to 9.30pm (New class cycle starts on the first Tuesday of every month)

Designed for beginners with little or no climbing experience, this programme comprises four guided lessons that teach basic climbing footwork and techniques, and how to climb with proper form. With guidance from experienced coaches, progress is inevitable in no time!

Quick tips

Here are some things to take note of before your ascent:

  1. As with any sport, warm up properly to prevent injuries and ensure that your body is ready for the workout so you can have a good climbing experience.

  2. Use your feet and not just your arms. Leg muscles are much stronger than your arm muscles, so they will get you further.

  3. Learn to identify the difficulty of climbs, which have been graded and indicated using colours, so that you can start on something easy and then work your way to more challenging routes as you improve.
