Crowning Glory

Crowning Glory

Hundreds Of Rugby Fans
gathered at OCBC Square on 1 and 2 November to watch South Africa lift the 2019 Rugby World Cup. This is the third time that the Springboks — as the South African national team are affectionately known — have won the tournament, which is held every four years. This year’s win puts the African nation in the joint-lead for the number of titles won, alongside the famed New Zealand All-Blacks.

Watching this momentous occasion live was a thrilling moment for fans gathered at OCBC Square, who were first treated to a fine game between South Africa and England. Ultimately, the former reigned supreme, winning 32-12.

The live screening was organised by Societe Generale in partnership with the Singapore

Rugby Union and the Singapore Sports Hub. The finals weren’t the only match screened; fans also got to watch the lively battle for third and fourth place. Held the day before, this match was between New Zealand and Wales (the former won). The two screenings were organised in partnership with BeIN Sports, the Rugby World Cup’s official broadcaster.

Families who had gathered to watch the matches were also treated to a variety of fringe activities. Among these were stage programmes and party food and drinks from pop-up stalls. The two-day event was also a chance for members of the Singapore national team to give back to the community through a rugby clinic for beneficiaries of various charities and non-government organisations.

Looking To 2020
Rugby fans needn’t wait long for more nail-biting action from the pitch. Fans can look forward to another epic clash in April 2020, as Fiji tries to avenge their loss against newly-minted Rugby World Cup champs South Africa at the HSBC Singapore Rugby Sevens. This is an important tournament to catch as participating teams will be shaping up for the Tokyo Olympics later that year.
