THE CROWN JEWEL EVENT of women’s tennis is back for the fifth and final edition here in Singapore. I’m A Fan…
And Volunteer

Mr Alvin Tay, 61, who has been volunteering as a Court & Venue Operations Team Leader (TL) with the WTA Finals Singapore since its debut in 2014, shares his off-court experiences.

The 2017 edition was the busiest for me — I worked 30 out of 33 shifts, with each shift lasting five to seven hours. I’m retired so I could afford the time. But even if someone was working, or had any urgent matters to attend to, we would assign duties or had someone take over such that nobody’s personal schedule was affected. Proper planning of the daily roster — one of many duties of a TL — was, therefore, very important but also challenging.

I thoroughly enjoyed and had fun as a volunteer for the past four editions. To be watching the players in the flesh, sometimes engaging them and providing them the services was truly an honour.

This year will be the last WTA Finals being held here. May it be the one to top it all!”

Danish Delight

  • Caroline Wozniacki, the only Danish player to compete in the WTA Finals, had one of the biggest wins of her career when she clinched the singles title in 2017. Her championship win was also her first-ever victory over Venus Williams, who had a 7-0 record against Wozniacki dating back to 2007 when they first met.
