Love Is In The Air At The Singapore Sports Hub

Everyone knows the Singapore Sports Hub is the place for sports, entertainment and lifestyle. But did you know that the Hub is also great for romance?

For one, you can take your engagement and pre-wedding photos at the National Stadium, whose beautiful architecture will act as a unique backdrop for your photos — and memories.

Another reason the Hub is good for romance is that it can make a great location for a wedding proposal, and no one knows this better than engaged couple Mahy Umar and Nur Atikah. After all, Mahy proposed to his girlfriend Atikah at the Singapore Sports Hub in April 2019 at the boardwalk beside the Water Sports Centre.

What made it more awesome is that it was no ordinary proposal. It involved a flash mob, a group of Mahy’s friends who suddenly streamed in from all corners of the area and put up a high-energy dance performance in front of Atikah, who had been brought there by Mahy.

As the group performed their act, Mahy presented a weeping Atikah a bouquet of flowers, after which, he too, joined in the dance. He brought the performance to a climax when he got down on bended knee to formally ask Atikah for her hand.

She said yes amid cheers from everyone present.

Mahy reveals that he had taken Atikah to check out various locations under the guise of helping his friend source a place to propose. “When we reached the Singapore Sports Hub, Atikah’s reaction to the scenery told me this was the right spot,” he says.

He then contacted the Singapore Sports Hub for permission to hold his proposal there and the team was really supportive and even informed its security officers about it so that the proposal wouldn’t be interrupted.

Mahy wanted to propose through dance because he and Atikah are passionate about the art form — both of them guide a team of youths in dance at T-Net Club @ Geylang West CC and also perform at events with a group of young Mediacorp dancers called the Sparrows.

“The people in my flash mob are our dance friends who are so close to us, we call them family,” says Mahy.

He spent two months preparing and rehearsing with his crew, even secretly practising their dance at the actual venue so as to get a feel of the ground.

Mahy says: “One challenge was how I could join in the dance myself and surprise Atikah. As I had only a short time to appear in front of her with her favourite flowers, I had to sneak back slowly and sprint one whole round around the beach volleyball area to the other side, grab the flowers and prepare to join in.”

“It took tonnes of hard work,” added Mahy. “But everything was worth it.”

After that romantic proposal, the couple will be holding their wedding in March this year. We wish them all the best.
